Introduction: Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition wherein dark patches appear on the skin. These patches can vary in their size and can appear anywhere on the body. The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is prolonged exposure to the sun rays which further increases the melanin production in the body.  Find here other reasons your skin is turning darker:

Hyperpigmentation: What causes the skin to darken?

1.      Excessive production of melanin can make the skin turn darker. It is the pigment that provides color to our skin and can be affected by several other factors.

2.      Pregnancy-induced change in hormones is another cause of melanin production which then leads to hyperpigmentation.

3.      Certain medications including chemotherapy drugs have the side effect of hyperpigmentation.

4.      Exposure to the sun for long durations promotes the production of melanin in the body. As more melanin is produced, it makes the skin darker leading to hyperpigmentation.

Conclusion: Hyperpigmentation is not a serious skin condition and can be prevented and controlled. Using sunscreen and a pigmentation cream can show visibly improved results.
