How UVA and UVB Rays Damage Skin

Introduction: Sunlight comprises different types of rays, out of which the most harmful for human skin are the ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB in particular. While UVA is responsible for skin aging, UVB can cause sunburn. As per a study published by the National Library of Medicine, both UVA and UVB rays are ‘carcinogenic’ that is they can cause skin cancer. Let us understand better how UVA and UVB rays damage the skin:

  1. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, aggravating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  2. UVA rays can cause the skin to age prematurely since they can cause oxidative damage to the skin cells.

  3. UVB rays, on the other hand, do not penetrate deep into the skin since it is absorbed by the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin). Hence, it causes sunburn, skin reddening, and inflammation.

  4. Excessive exposure to UVB rays can also lead to skin pigmentation or discoloration.

Conclusion: Since both the UVA and UVB rays are damaging to the skin, proper skin care is required. Invest in an effective sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from sun damage.
